DVD Review: Spread

Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche, Margarita Lavieva

Rated R

Grade B

Usually when you see Ashton Kutcher in a movie, you have an expectation of that film, and it’s usually not very high. I was actually quite surprised by this film, although it is far from an Oscar® winning film. It is well written and for the most part well acted, surprisingly.

Ashton Kutcher will always have a hard time being taken seriously as an actor, given his past resume. With shows like “That 70’s Show” and “Punked” under his belt, he will be hard pressed to be accepted as a dramatic actor. Having said that, this is a good start. I think the reason this works so well for him is the fact that he didn’t have to act too much; it seems this character is very similar to his real life, but it works! Anne Heche is great in this film, as she is in most of her films. The rest of the cast is rather bland; they come and go and don’t really allow you to become attached to them. Although they are acted well, they just leave you with no attachment.

I was thrilled by the ending of this film. It is not you usual happily ever after ending and I love it when a movie does that. It was more true-to-life than all the other re-hashed romantic-comedy garbage we are forced to sit through.

The film is not for everyone, as it is rather graphic, yet another surprise. It is a well deserved Rated R. If that doesn’t scare you off, then give it a try.

I don't have a problem with Kutcher but the trailer for this made it look like the type of film only used for punishing really bad people but, OK, perhaps I'll give it go based on this.
