DVD Review: Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

Kristen Kreuk, Neal McDonough, Michael Clark Duncan, Chris Klein, Moon Bloodgood, Robin Shou

Rated PG-13

Grade: C-

We all remember the horrible film adaptation of the Capcom video game “Street Fighter: that starred none other than Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia and its utter suckiness. While this film is nothing to write home about, it’s a slight step up from the original 1994 version.

The script is stiff, at best and the actors, who are usually not this incapable, do with it what they can. The story is a rehashed version of what we’ve seen many times before in “B” movies: Bad guy blackmails city officials to rid the city of slums making him look like a savior. There is nothing real new and exciting.

The acting, while not horrible by some, was hard to watch for most of them, especially Chris Klein. He was stiff and just tried way too hard to be a tough guy, but ultimately came across as a no-talent hack. The others were tolerable, considering the script.

You’d expect a show like this to have some decent fighting sequences, which it does, but again, below the standards of what you really like to see. They were the only really good part of the film.

“Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” is not anything I’d run out to rent or see, but if you came across it on the FX channel one night, give it a try.
