DVD Review: From Hell

Johnny Depp, Heather Graham, Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane

Rated R

Grade C+

Although it seems odd that a film like this would be based on a graphic novel, truth be told, it is. However, it is very loosely based on that book. The film is dark ad violent and offers a rather new perspective on the identity of Jack the Ripper, but it leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth. The film is acted decently, but the story is lacking and rather underwhelming.

Johnny Depp has quickly become one of the most sought after actors of our time and for good reason: he’s an incredible actor. However, this film is not one of his better roles. He seems to be missing that quirkiness he is known for having, which some might argue as a good thing. For me, it makes his character seem dry and one dimensional. Heather Graham just is not a great actress, although this is probably one of her better roles. Naturally, Ian Holm and Robbie Coltrane really steal the show. Both are very talented and they are not holding back in this film.

The Hughes brothers did a good job of keeping this film dark and gritty, which is very necessary for a film and topic of this type. It just adds to the over all ambiance of the film. Nothing incredible was done as far as camera or lighting here, just a straightforward film style, not adding to or taking away from the film in any way.

While the film is interesting to watch, it is nothing new or mind blowing. Johnny Depp is not his usual self and it pulls you from the story and leaves you wanting a bit more than you get.
